About the author

David Wolber

David Wolber, the lead author of this book, is a professor of Computer Science at the University of San Francisco. He enjoys basketball, reading, politics, philosophy and psychology. He teaches Introduction to Computer Science using Python, and recently he’s been teaching beginning programming in particular courses using App Inventor for Android, in order to make the non-computer major students can also create their own apps.

Hal Abelson

It’s difficult to tell the story of professor Abelson with a piece of text. He is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. He won various awards from MIT, IEEE and ACM. If there is one word to sum up his contribution, it must be “Education”! “Of all the ways to be honored, for me education is the one that really means the most,” As he said when he won the awards, “That’s how I think of myself at MIT, as a teacher.”

Abelson has been a leader in computer science education for over thirty years and continues to play a key role. His textbook “Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs,” co-authored with Gerry Sussman, changed the way many thought about computing(The Chinese version was translated by Qiu Zongyan, the professor of Peking University). It was widely emulated and adopted by colleges around the world. It de-emphasized the specifics of a particular programming language and concentrated on the idea of abstraction as a fundamental concept in all programming.

Abelson is more concerned about the nature of learning in his educational practice: learning in interaction with the real world. App Inventor is the embodiment of his thoughts. As the director of App Inventor team, his goal is let the beginner understand the connotation of programming language and get hold of programming method in the hands-on creative experience. As Seymour Papert, the developer of constructionism, described the “mathland”, “where learning mathematical ideas is as natural as learning French while living in France.”

In addition to his curricular efforts, Abelson is an advocate of the open source movement. He is a founding director of both Creative Commons and the Free Software Foundation. He is a leader in the movement for open educational resources. He was the main force that convinced MIT to offer courses to the world through the MIT Open Courseware platform

Ellen Spertus

Ellen Spertus is the co-author of this book. She is a professor of Computer Science at Mills College, Oakland, California, United States, and a senior research scientist at Google. At MIT She received a B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering, a master’s and a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. She spent several summers between terms working for Microsoft. Spertus has written articles treating both technical and social subjects, often combining the two. She was profiled in a 1993 New York Times article about “women who might change the face of the computer industry”, then she was named “The Sexiest Geek Alive”. Since 2009, Spertus joined the team of Google App Inventor for Android, and participate in the writing of this book.

Liz Looney
